DIL CHAHTA HAI : The unexpressed thoughts.

For 6 years now , I have been trying to write about it and now i got the time to do that. This movie taught me that what it is to get immersed in the storyline while watching the film. Pure bliss!! A story about 3 guys who have passed out of college and are enjoying their lives. It is a story about their lives, their emotions and their friendship. The most enthrailing thing comes up in the casting itself- the background music which is there…so soothing and perfect. If you ponder over the words, DIL CHAHTA HAI would translate into what the heart wants today – our friends, love and the support from the families.

A frantic phone call had aakash and sameer rush to sid`s house made me think that do friends really do this and the reply was a definite yes. Now this was pure friendship where other`s troubles seem like your own, his happiness yours. Their talk is so close to us. Their colourful holi at midnight is the starting of many fun moments. The hug between sameer and sid speaks volumes about 2 pals meeting after a long time. The joy in the voice is truly estatic. Even the people watching could feel the emotions. The graduation party is the perfect example of the various “chipku” college gals whom you wanna ignore at any costs. Aamir is pure joy. He sure lights up be the screen with his pranks, be it starting a fight between sameer and priya or proposing to shalini in that awesome way and then being all purple in the eye. The common reaction between me and aamir on seeing the first shot of Preity was WOW!!!! He was doing that on the screen and I was doing that watching the screen. Sameer is still synomonous with his installment talk on the phone. The fun part starts on the trip to goa. The song really sets up the mood. The race with the train is carried on even till today by all of us. A trip with your buddies, far from the maddening crowd is the biggest relaxer. The fort scene really captured the beauty of the sea and Goa. The talk between the 3 of them especially sid`s wordings made reality come face to face with us. Truly said ..kiski zindagi kisko kahan le jaayegi kya pata??? Kabhi socha hai ki har saal yahaan aana to ek taraf , shayad 10 saal mein ek baar bhi milna mushkil ho. And the reassurance from aakash Hum dost they, hain aur rahenge…HAMESHA KE LIYE !!!
A varied contrast in every one of them. Sid is the smartest ,be it about life or about someone`s feelings. His wordings really taught me that do not grasp anything too tightly or it will slip between the fingers. Sameer is the guy in love with every girl(those heart up his sleeve types) and finally aakash who wants to be just tension free like when he talks to his dad-

Dad : yehi haal raha to mere budaaape tak ek aadh cheque to sign kar hi loge

Akash: dad zindagi mein cheque sign karne ke ilaava bhi bhaut kuch hai
Dad : aur kya hai yeh bahut kuch???Akash: abhi tak to nahin pata magar pata lagte hi sabse pehle aapko hi bataunga.

The great thing about them is that the trio moves in teams of 2….be it going to sid`s house at midnight or to sameer`s when he is relaxing on the pillow. He is out of this world. Absolutely tongue tied infront of pooja but when she leaves, he is in love with her…that is why akash said… tera koi bharosa nahin, aaj pooja kal koi dooja.. The most stunning scene which changes the story dramatically is when they return from the b`day party. The slap showed that there is a line in friendship which should never be crossed and the “did-not-counter-slap” from akash did keep the respect and dignity of friendship intact and alive. Those few dialogues between the two of them really outclasses everything else. Sameer played the part of a peacemaker absolutely perfectly. Remember what he said to akash?? Doston ke beech kabhi kabhi ho jaata hai yaar.

… Looked like akash would never grow up, be it the graduation party or the plane.. Preity was mindblowing in her character of Shalini, a gal who is modern yet simple and understanding. Her chemistry with aamir is just mindblowing and fabulous. The close up shots of both of them at the train station really shows the emotions between them. When sameer says to sid, “agar pooja ne na kar di to main phir se akela ho jaunga…tu bhi yahan nahin tha aur akash bhi”.. his words really summarized the fact that we dread a girl`s no the most and the backing up of our friends is needed in that time. When preity comes to the opera, that is the 2nd time my heart goes wow again. The way she explains aamir the feeling of love would make anyone believe in love…all you need to do is to understand the emotions.

The scene when akash closes his eyes and sees shalini really completes the whole opera scene. His transformation really began from that scene onwards. The pain of love is really reflected in “Tanhai”. When he cries in his room it shows the pain in his heart. Now he understands the words which sid had said and that is why he dials up his no. when he wanted to talk to sameer. His memories at the college are very nostalgic…everybody goes through those feelings and emotions. The scene which deserves a standing ovation is at the hospital. Right from where they start talking on the phone to where they hug…..just freeze all that and feel it…akash`s words aaj , abhi, isi waqt ,just turn around and the the looking up of sid are out of this world… A heart warming scene and I cry everytime I watch it…EVERYTIME !!
Preity and aamir look really good and her acting and emotions really made me sit up and take notice – literally. I thought that that only she could pull up such an amazing performance with such ease. All the 3 guys are outstanding. The songs are truly abundant in variety and emotions- the fun loving DIL CHAHTA HAI , the feeling of love speaking Kaisi hai yeh rut, the dance floor burning Koi kahe, the love song Who ladki, the reasoned love one Jaane kyun and the chartbuster of them all TANHAYEE….No other song captures the pain and feelings of love as beautifully as this one. Aamir`s emotions made that song beautiful. Even the wordings go hand in hand with the scenes. For me the climax had everything… one of those dialogues which showed that undeclared love is painful.that is why akash said to shalini-

Mujhse shaadi karogi??

Agar main tumse kahoon ki main tumse pyar karta hoon tab bhi nahin??
Shalini, main sirf tumse pyar karta hoon
Meri har saans, har dhadhkan, har pal mein sirf tum ho shalini
Mujhe yakin hai ki main sirf isliye janma hoon ki tumse pyar kar sakoon aur tum sirf isliye ki ek din meri ban jaao
Agar tum apne dil se poochogi to jaan logi ki main sach keh raha hoon..

Who would have thought that one day these very words would become a reality for him considering the joke that he did on the graduation day party with these same words and the same girl… always remember PYAR SOCH SAMAJH KAR NAHIN KIYA JAATA , BAS JO JAATA HAI.......

This movie also shows one thing that families do understand the feelings of their children. First it was akash`s dad who called him back from Australia when he got the slightest hint that he was not happy there and then he was the one who gave me the support and confidence to go and tell shalini about his feelings and find out the reason. He understood well that what was akash going through. Then it was shalini`s father who understood his daughter`s state of the heart…. Amazing families which are really special..

Even till today I remember each and every frame of this movie, every scene to follow, every dialogue, everything…I was the most happiest when it got the national award for the best film and lagaan lost.. I never ever wanted lagaan to win the national award. The day when it won the national award, I celebrated the night as if it was diwali.. I still keep its dvd in a safe place away from everbody….its accessible only to me… bcoz DIL CHAHTA HAI…

Why DCH is a part of my life ???????

All those people who know me really really well(select friends, relatives and parents) know how much I am crazy about DCH. The craziness exceeds all boundaries but they really do not understand why I do it. Here it is why-

· The times I have watched this movie is well above 850+.

· It is as fresh as the morning breeze everytime.

· This movie showed me that it is not necessary to have dance steps in every song. The song can be completed even with pure emotions.

· It has the perfect balance between extremes. Neither does it depict the love in extremes like that of devdas, nor friendship as sholay. It knows very well where to draw the line.

· The music sure does takes you into a trip to heaven.

· I am still searching for those 2 exclusive friends who can barge into my house at midnight at just one call.

· The joy and emotions of meeting someone after such a long time can only be felt. It cannot be expressed. I know it bcoz I have felt it from my heart whenever I have met someone after a very long time.

· The music of SEL is truly fab alongwith the lyrics of javed sahab. Some years back when shankar mahadevan came as a contestant on SaReGaMa , listening to his voice and just one one line made me realize that his voice had the magic to make it big but had never imagined the spell he would cast years later through such awesome songs in DCH.

· My all time fav. Song “ Tanhai” is from this movie. It took SEL 15 min. to prepare the tune for this song ( the longest ever they did it for any song and it is the most toughest one for which they have ever worked…They told this once).

· The film taught me all about friendship and love.

· And the fact that “ Pyar faisle se nahin kiya jaata, bas ho jaata hai”.

· Enjoying every moment you are with friends, is more like heaven and the most treasured.

· The sounds effects are awesome. The dialogues looked like they are being spoken to the person watching it and he is also in the same room as the 3 of them.

·We do need parents who can treat us as friends or someone who can understand our feelings and pain just like our friends would do it...No showing of authority please. (remember akash`s father telling him to go and tell shalini his feelings). Now in which household would you get that response ???? few, very few…

· A guy can go down on his knees, tears in the eyes and can express his feelings to the one girl he loves the most anywhere and also when the situation demands it.

· Enjoying every moment you are with your friends, is the most treasured and seems like heaven.

· The kind of respect I have it for this movie is you can say , phenominal..no small letters allowed while writing the name of this movie…..whether it is the full DIL CHAHTA HAI or the short DCH…only block letters allowed.

· I understood that every girl does have a small heart which can fall in love with someone without informing(we guys are not the only ones who fall in love).

· Pyar aapko badal nahin sakta…….badal hi deta hai.

· The 2nd time around Goa seemed more beautiful as I visited all the places shown in the movie….every single one of them(got a chance to go there after 10 years just recently).

· Life without your best friends can be really boring.

· Before making fun of others` feelings keep one thing in mind that one day you will also go through the same feelings and then you will experience unbearable pain…

· This movie taught me to have fun with my friends.

· This movie brings everything in reality.. it doesn`t show the characters saying I LOVE YOU to each other in the streets of mumbai and in the next frame we have the dream song(mostly unnecessary) in the slopes of Switzerland with stupid dance steps…

· Jab aankhen hi aapas mein baat kar lein to zubaan ki zaroorat nahin hoti..

· Agar uljhan ya mushkil ke waqt koi puraana yaar saath ho to mushkil apne aap hi kum ho jaati hai aur umeed ka aisa sahara milta hai jo bayaan nahin hota.

· After seeing this movie, I am afraid of loosing my friends……they all met once again after 2 years(akash, sameer and sid) but I do not know when I will meet them(my friends) if I loose them…but be assured of one thing, at any point of our meeting, the joy and the tears in the eyes would be more heart warming alongwith the hug which would be even more tighter than the one between akshay and aamir.

This movie has done it all the time for the others…..a perfect trump card for others to be used against me. It served as an alarm clock. The title track was used(and also even till today) to wake me up from my sound sleep anytime…all you needed to do was to search the tv channel playing that song and I would be wide awake in 5 seconds the moment the song went into my ears…….everytime, anytime, always… FOREVER !!!!!!!!

Some lessons to be learnt from the movie DIL CHAHTA HAI….

Ø Freaking out and enjoying life doesn`t need drugs or ciggarates.

Ø There are relationships apart from bf/gf, marriage, siblings, friendship that can be very emotional and true which is beyond the understanding of many people.

Ø And yeah though you maybe the best of friends there is always a limit which should never be crossed. Then it starts hurting…..

Ø Improving your imperfections after you realize it, always takes some time.

Ø You always don`t need to show or prove your gf how much you love or care about her, which can sound very boring and finally you are dumped.

Ø Do not be afraid of others, always think that others are afraid of you.

Ø You don`t need a cellphone while you are studying or freaking out doing nothing, once you fall into business or job then you may need it.

Ø No one is perfect.

I have been trying to follow all the above points in my life ever since I watched DCH in the hall and I must say that they have become a part of my life, except for the cell phone point which was entrusted to me forcefully.. Since then I have been trying not to break any more of these “heavenly” rules. These things have added a new dimension in my life.
