Friendship: How it all started with Rahul Saini

Rahul saini – He is India`s different writer in my opinion and his story of should I say friendship with me goes back some 6 years and that too started very differently. So sharing with you the story how it all started and how I have seen him where he is today.. his writing no doubt is a breath of fresh air.

It all started with my MBA days in Jaipur in 2008. Book fair was one place where I used to go regularly. As I was going through one of the stalls, the cover of a book caught my attention. The colour was soothing to the eye as well as the design. The line was also a bit amusing which described it,
“Have you ever known a guy who would gift his girlfriend soap?". Those small little things in life and love ( his 1st book) felt quite different. Back in my hostel when I started reading it, I was literally blown away, the incidents seemed so close to my life. It seemed like someone had taken a pen and penned down my life right there and then. That was the era of Orkut, Facebook was still in the nascent stages so I joined the community of the book and wrote to Rahul about what I felt about the book. Strangely enough…he replied. I used to call his book ( and still do) “ The mix of Dil Chahta Hai and the romance of yashraj ( the same line he wrote in the description of the community). From there on a bond of friendship just started unknowingly.

The poster of the First book that I have sent by him

The handwritten letter

The original packing still intact

He is / will be the first and only person who sent me 2 posters of his book by courier and a handwritten letter. Even after 6 years all that is intact with me (the packing is still there in the same manner as it was 6 years back). I loved his book so much that I gifted the same to my best friend on her birthday. Its another matter that I had to search majority of Jaipur for that copy. For many years he used to receive my messages with the line, " Your 1st book is still in bookstores" (even after the launch of the later titles).

When his 2nd book was undergoing writing, I was probably the first few lucky ones to read the sample draft and give my suggestions. (Just like in the movies).

Autographed copy of the Orange Hangover

He came to delhi for the launch of the 3rd book (The Orange Hangover) and I knew that I had to meet him anyhow this time. With location being Ambience Mall, Gurgaon and no chance of me getting an early leave from office, I had to make up the excuse of family medical emergency to move from there. Landed at the venue after making past Gurgaon`s nightmarish traffic woes. I had already finished the book and wanted to hear him speak about the story. When the book signing session was over and I introduced myself, there was a beam of happiness on his face. He introduced me to his friend saying, “He is my biggest critic. I hope he likes what I write, always keep my fingers crossed while I wait for his views”. His autograph on my copy is the most treasured one (besides the one from Manreet Someshwar).

The only promise he hasnt kept since then is a Delhi book launch after this. 2 books came after that but he hasnt come to Delhi for the launches... Grrr..

I have read all the books he has come out with. The best being the debut one. Nothing can beat that one. I don’t know how do people term books as best sellers by the numbers, for me its always have been stories which touch the heart as the "best sellers"... be it romantic, something to which you can relate to and stuff like that. I have termed Rahul`s books as something which everyone should read... they carry a bit of friendship, cute romance and things like that without resorting to drastic needs of the other things to write. I have always placed guarantees on his books whenever I have recommended it to my friends that , " पसंद न आये तो मैं पैसे दूंगा तुझे किताब के " and you can guess which one I tell them to read... The very first one because the emotions in it would never grow old or go out of fashion. I have been more vocal to him with my demands in the next books )

More than the books its the equation with him as a friend / reader/ Critic (his word, not mine) that makes me feel nice as he really tries to understand what makes it tick. What started simple as an interaction some 6 years back has turned into a bond I treasure..

Waiting for his next one and yes a photo with him.......

Missed chances: #WillYouShave

Missed chances can be terrible mistakes which cant be undone in any way. People miss out on various chances due to a variety of reasons and somewhat different and unusual is missing out on such chances due to a non shaven face. Yes it can happen and it has happened with me quite a few times..twice actually and it was all because I seemed to a bit lazy. So here are 2 instances where I missed out on a few chances due to a non shaven face all because of my laziness.

June 2009

The city was Delhi. I had just passed out of my MBA and was looking for a job because the recession time meant that on campus placements didnt happen exactly as we would have liked. I had just applied for a job on monster.com. Nothing else mattered as to the profile, it was a job then and I wanted it as long as it was a job. One fine morning I got a call from a company saying that its an interview and are you prepared to give it? I was under the impression that this might be a telephonic round as I got up late around 8.45 and I had not shaved for the past 2-3 days so there was a quite a stubble. I said yes and then the person on the line said " Ok, make it to this place by 10.15 am. " I was like shocked as the time was adequate for other things things but not when I had a beard to take care of. Being on the backfoot I told them that I couldnt make it that fast and then he said to me, " Why ? You said you were ready for the interview " I said, " I thought it would be a telephonic round". He gave me an extension of time but even then I couldnt make it out from my home on time and when he called me up to inquire I had to make an excuse that my cousin had to be rushed immediately to the hospital so it wont be possible as I was just back from the hospital.

That person was livid on the phone and he said to me that what would happen if he would give me a task and I`ll be this irresponsible and in my mind I was saying, " I haven`t taken up the offer".. The person was a director of some school and I had to take the help of some excuses to let his PA know that it was an emergency and I couldnt have made it and in the ensuing commotion I could not intimate them. Dont worry.. I missed nothing as the PA was a man. A lady could have got me thinking about making it to the interview next day. Whatever be the final result, I really did miss out on a opportunity of a job due to a non shaven face.

March 2010

I was in a company in Lucknow at this time working on a different payroll. Majority of my work was in the field and very rarely we were called to the head office. One day I was in the field and got the call from my senior that the Regional BDM had called all of us to discuss further strategies. As usual it was my lazy `no shave` day and being in the field I payed no attention to the stubble but this call changed all that.

In the office, when the BDM saw me, he told me bluntly, "Whats this?? Without a shave?" and I told him an excuse that worked, " Sir I am thinking of keeping a beard" and he was all ok. This excuse meant that I had to keep an unshaven face for the next 5 days to let the stubble take the shape of a beard. Once more I was called in the office due to some work and I said, " If I had shaved today, you must have thought that it was an excuse that day". Finally I did clean it all up after 2 days saying.. " Its not working". My excuses might have saved me those days but I dont know that how my bearded appearances might have affected my performance review. Maybe or may not a chance missed.

My dream 24K home with Porcelanosa #Happyhours #24KLiving

“My own home” – this is one dream of everyone and when its finally achieved it’s a great feeling in itself. Once the house is all yours, the process of making it a home starts with each and every thing customized and according to the choice of the family members. Each and everyone wants his/her room complete with the colours of the walls, amenities and facilities. Its like a small world in itself where every room and inch of the house speaks of some unfulfilled dreams waiting to the accomplished. More than the house, it’s the furniture and various things which give it the elegant look and with PORCELANOSA and its various products at the helm of things regarding products for homes, its bound to be different from the others and get noticed which would set it apart from the crowd.

If I get the chance to build my home from the various products that PORCELANOSA has to offer this is what I would go in for from the huge range-

Floor tiles-

PAR-KER

Apart from the fact that it is highly resistance to wear by continuous use and no effect even by sunlight, the look and texture of wood gives it a warm and cosy feeling. Little Oxford is the perfect shade to complement that. There is something about wood texture which gives it an edge over modern floor tiles and this is where the par-ker range meets my liking.

Wall tiles-

Metal Effect

Irish Silver tiles having the metal effect is a treat on the eyes as metal gives a very different look than traditional tiles at homes. With sunlight bound to reflect off them, there would be a very different feel in the house. Silver has always been a calmer and lighter shade to bear so it works awesome.

Kitchen-

The most frequented place in the home by hungry kids, husband and the family members. All requests, orders regarding food are fulfilled here and various ultimate delicacies are created here. So it becomes important to give the lady of the house a place where she can complete all such food related demands without having a feeling of fatigue or tiredness during long hours. Kitchen is one such place where they should feel at ease while working.

Furniture:

The G680 Roble Esparto Vintage / G500 Antracita Brillo in the furniture range would make sure that even the smallest of kitchen spaces seem to be the most spacious.

Indoor furniture:

The Curve Roble Blanco Cal chairs make sure that the chairs are spacious and comfortable for everyone to enjoy their meals at the fullest right from the grandparents to the grandchildren and everyone in between. The table would be the the same from Curve Roble Blanco.

Taps:

Nothing else apart from the Monomando Loop by Noken. Its
different design is what catches the eye.

Kitchen Worktops:

The main battleground when it comes to preparation of food. This is where the bulk of the action happens and so its equally important that they should also complement the rest of the kitchen. The flat surface worktops by Krion make sure that the lady of the house gets a lot of space with ease to recreate her magic in the kitchen. When the issue is working space, there cant be any compromise.

Bathroom:

The most important place in the house. A place where people have sometime to themselves not to mention all the singing practice which takes place.

Furniture:

Matching with the flooring in the rest of the house, Tetris Blanco Brillo is the final choice. The finish is what seems to be the perfect substitute with the wooden tiles in the house.

Rain shower:

Who doesn’t love rain and getting drenched in the rainfall. Recreating the exact feel will be the Seasons rain shower. Nothing more after that.

Taps, Sanitaryware and Basins:

The Urban C taps give a different look and feel as to how taps are used in the bathrooms. Krabi Brown stone basins go with the brown look of the bathroom alongwith the sanitaryware from Soft.

Wardrobes:

Who says that only ladies need big wardrobes and dressing rooms to get ready?? Its equally important for the men to indulge themselves while getting ready. Who doesn’t like a big , nice place all to himself. So choosing from the wide range that PORCELANOSA has to offer here, it would come down to Natura Roble Marengo / Lino Cancún Textil in the dressing room and Terra Yeso Brillo in the wardrobe department.

The dressing room so chosen has a huge space to keep things and to get ready without any space issue and the wardrobe from Terra has a soft colour which is pleasurable to the eyes.

So these are the various products from PORCELANOSA which would make my dream home..

All images used here are from the PORCELANOSA website http://www.porcelanosa.com/gb/products.php

This post was written for #Indiblogger for the Happy hours campaign for PORCELANOSA… head to http://www.24kliving.com/ to know more. #24KLiving

Liebster award : My third nomination

Liebster again for me... The third nomination in 10 months. The nominator this time is Aseem http://transitionofthoughts.com/ .

I thank him and get down straight to business.

The rules -

1. Acknowledge the nominating blogger.

2. Answer the questions the nominating blogger has created for you.

3. List 10 bloggers who you think deserve recognition (having less than 200 followers)

4. Post 10 questions for the nominees to answer.

5. Let all of the bloggers know about their nomination.

6. The person nominating you cant be nominated again...they can only be thanked.

 The questions now-

1. What product (eg: a book, pen, paper etc.) would you associate your personality to and why?

A firecracker.... just like you dont know what would be the intensity of the blast, same with me. I am unpredictable as hell.

2. What’s the craziest thing you have done at school? Or were you a very nice and sweet little child? ;)

I always bound myself by rules of school and in turn turned into a good, sweet boy something which i regret now. I wish i should have played some pranks then.

3. Describe the feeling of blogging in one word?

Estatic

4. If you were packed off to Tristan Da Cunha (famous as the loneliest island in the world), who would you prefer to be with? Or would you be alone? And why?

I would be rather be with someone I adore and love. I would go crazy all alone so its important I have some company to keep me all sane.

5. What is the best and the worst thing you have heard about your blog?

Hmmm... Lets see.. The best has been that I write emotions well and some topics which no one anticipates. The worst has been the use of Hindi in english articles.

6 . Life as a bed of roses or life full of obstacles, you prefer? (The middle ground is not an option ;))

Enough of thorns in life....let there be roses

7. Any specific book / movie which has shaped the journey of your life?

If its a movie I would pick up Dil Chahta hai for making me realise all about friendship and love and if its a book I would go for my friend Rahul Saini`s first novel " Those small things in life and love". Its my favourite after so many years still... its just too close to the heart and a feeling of nostalgia is there.

8. If you have just been announced as the winner of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’, what would you do with the money?

Lets wait for the world situation to cool down and I`ll head to Russia and Ukraine for a flight in the MIG 29 "Fulcrum" fighter jet. Its all a part of military tourism. All the cash will go towards this flight.

9. What’s that one dream which if fulfilled will give a new meaning to your life?

When dreams shatter, they give a lot of pain...so I dont talk about dreams now.. skip the question please.

10. What is the most exciting thing you have ever done (or you want to do)?

I want to try skydiving once.

11. Are you an optimist or a pessimist?

Depends on whats at stake.

The nominations this time are-

My questions this time-

1. Name one movie that you can watch over and over again.

2. Do you believe in passion? If yes, have you found yours?

3. You have tickets for a book fair, a food festival, a cricket match and a movie marathon at an auditorium, all four happening at the same time. Which one would you choose and why?

4. One good childhood memory

5. Name your favorite food item (if it is too difficult to choose, pick any one of your favorites.

6. Everyone asks about love. I want to know how important do you think lust is in a relationship?

7. What is your biggest guilty pleasure?

8. Do you travel solo or with people? Who’s your favourite travel companion?
